Zika and Mosquitos in Virginia When it comes to mosquitos and the transmission of the Zika virus, this summer the CSPDC is helping the Central Shenandoah Health District of the Virginia Health Department “Fight the Bite.” Mosquito season in Virginia runs from May to October, and the Asian tiger mosquito that is found in Virginia can transmit Zika virus. This type of mosquito develops into adults in about 10 days and spends their lives within a two hundred yard area. To date, there have been no local cases of Zika transmission in Virginia, and reducing the risk of local transmission is dependent on limiting person to mosquito contact and controlling the mosquito population. Effective control of this mosquito requires the use of insect repellent and to dump, discard, cover, or treat even the smallest containers of water on your property. PICK-A-DAY to FIGHT-THE-BITE This summer, pick one day of the week to empty or change water in outdoor containers to “Fight the Bite.” Download this handy guide to help you identify possible mosquito breeding sites on your property and protect yourself from mosquito bites. Additional resources can be found at: www.zikava.org. The Virginia Zika State Response Plan can be found HERE. Crozet Tunnel Tours Offered The Blue Ridge Tunnel Foundation is offering guided tours of the Claudius Crozet Tunnel the 2nd Saturday of each month during April, May, June, and July. Although the trail is currently closed to the public, these tours offer a rare behind-the-scenes chance to tour this incredible project. The mostly flat 1.3 mile gravel trail ends at the eastern, all rock portal of the Tunnel. From there visitors can experience the cool, moist air and travel a short distance inside the tunnel to examine this historic, engineering marvel. The Blue Ridge Tunnel (Crozet Tunnel) is located in Afton, Virginia and its restoration has been an ongoing project for Nelson County since 2002. Phase I of the Blue Ridge Tunnel Project was completed in June 2015. This Phase encompassed construction of a parking area and trail head near the old Afton Depot and the construction of a pedestrian and bicycle trail along the original rail bed for approximately 3,400 feet to the East Portal of the 1850's tunnel. Phase II will include restoration of the western portal in Augusta County near Waynesboro. Tours will begin at 10:00 AM and last approximately two hours. Cost is $10 per person; kids under ten free with a paying adult. For more information or to register, please click HERE.
